conservatives want a smaller government

…one about the size of my reproductive system.

A US state’s prohibition on the sale of sex toys was left standing by the US Supreme Court when the court refused to hear a constitutional challenge to the law.

The Kansas attorney general is demanding abortion clinics turn over the complete medical records of nearly 90 women and girls, saying he needs the material for an investigation into underage sex and illegal late-term abortions.

I think the first one is a red herring. States prohibit the sale of all kinds of things (guns, drugs, chemicals, the list is endless). The fact that these things relate to sex doesn’t change that and so I don’t think it can really be tied to the second issue (control over reproductive systems as you articulated it).

If Alabamans want to ban the sale of sex toys in their state, then that’s their right. And of course if Alabamans don’t want that, they can vote someone pro-sextoy in! (LOL I can see it now “Vote for me, the candidate for dildos everywhere!). That’s federalism. On a practical note I’m not sure how they would enforce it or prohibit contraband. Though it might make smuggling via body cavities more enjoyable.

My guess is the intent is to make it harder to operate porn shops in the state.

BTW – I think the larger point that conservative pols aren’t really about smaller, less intrusive government, is quite valid.

From what I gathered in reading the article, it sounds like it’s illegal to sell sex toys, but not illegal to buy them. If that’s the case, stag shops on the Internet will probably enjoy an increase in sales from customers in Alabama.

In any case, I think it’s a silly roundabout way to tackle the real issue at hand.
